GENOMIC EPIDEMIOLOGY

“Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events (including disease), and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems. Various methods can be used to carry out epidemiological investigations: surveillance and descriptive studies can be used to study distribution; analytical studies are used to study
determinants.” – http://www.who.int/topics/epidemiology/en/

Epidemiology is the study and control of disease or injury patterns in human populations. Epidemiologists do fieldwork to determine what causes disease.

Epidemiology is the cornerstone of public health, pursuing insights into the causes, distribution, and prevention of disease in
populations.

Genetic epidemiology involve the use of molecular and bioinformatics tools for developing methods of epidemiological identification of pathogen. “The group uses sequencing together with informatics tools to spot occurrences of highly virulent or resistant pathogens and implement targeted interventions to prevent their spread.” –

Major areas of epidemiological study include disease etiology, transmission, outbreak investigation, disease surveillance, forensic epidemiology and screening, biomonitoring, and comparisons of treatment effects such as in clinical trials. Epidemiologists rely on other scientific disciplines like biology to better understand disease processes, statistics to make efficient use of the data and draw appropriate conclusions, social sciences to better understand proximate and distal causes, and engineering for exposure assessment. Finding Leads For Ebola Through Bioinformatics Exploration.

The scientists at the enzymology unit of the department of
biochemistry at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Nigeria, have decided to provide possible leads from potential medicinal plants in Nigeria, for the treatment of the deadly infectious disease called Ebola.

The method of bioinformatics was decided to be used after careful consideration of the risk of working on the live virus in such an academic research laboratory.
The study is also expected to divulge the genuineness of some of the acclaimed experimental reports, and consider critically the on-going rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine development.
